Syringe on Kailua Beach

Earlier today, an exposed and apparently used medical syringe was found by a tourist on the shoreline of Kailua beach. The needle was found in the midst of other debris that has collected on the beach in recent weeks following windy weather.

It is unclear whether the needle was discarded on the beach or out at sea and washed ashore. Also unknown is whether this syringe was used for medical purposes or for illicit drugs, but typically medical users such as diabetics take good care to discard their used syringes appropriately.

With Kailua's beaches constantly being used by locals and tourists, adults and children, the question is when will the City and County of Honolulu begin doing regularly scheduled beach sweeping to remove marine debris, rubbish and dangerous objects like this syringe.
